Counselling in St. Catharines

Are you struggling emotionally and having a difficult time articulating why?

Are you noticing changes in your demeanour or mood that is impacting your quality of life?

Are you feeling overwhelmed?

At ProActive, we are here to help address your anxiety, depression, or other concerns that are weighing on you. You are not alone.

How does counselling at ProActive work?

You will begin with an initial appointment with a Social Worker. This involves a conversation about your issues and how they are impacting your life. It’s important for your Social Worker (MSW) to understand the nature of your concern, and much time will be spent learning about what you need. Goals can be established to make sure you get the most out of your time together.

Counselling and goal setting are a collaborative effort between counsellor and client. Every individual has the tools and ability to help themselves; however, in difficult times this can be harder to see. It’s the responsibility of the Social Worker to empower individuals with their own existing and learned strengths, and both mental and emotional growth is encouraged throughout the counselling process.

Types of counselling we offer at ProActive

Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT)

Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) is one of the most empirically researched therapeutic techniques that challenges problematic thought patterns and behaviours. It is a ‘problem-based’ model. A concern is identified by the client, and their counsellor assists in exploring this further, understanding why this is problematic for the client. They develop unique strategies to alleviate unwanted symptoms, such as stress, anxiety or depressive thoughts.

Dialectical Behavioural Therapy (DBT)

Dialectical Behavioural Therapy is a type of CBT, but it mainly focuses an individual’s emotions to situations and how to better manage intense emotions.

Like CBT, Dialectical Behavioural Therapy offers practical skills to help an individual through periods of intense stress, depression or anxiety through a variety of skills.

Narrative Therapy

Narrative Therapy is a type of therapeutic practice that separates the person from their problem. It is a values-based approach to helping a client through a specific problem and is used in a shorter time frame than typical therapeutic practices.

This is ideal if you’re struggling with a specific circumstance or situation that is hard for you to navigate via your own thoughts and feelings alone.
