Dr. Taia Spencer-Yap

BSc, DC — Chiropractor, Acupuncture Provider, Owner

Born & raised in St. Catharines, Dr. Taia Spencer-Yap is a graduate of the Canadian Memorial Chiropractic College in Toronto. She is a certified Acupuncture and Graston Technique® provider, and uses muscle release therapy, taping and rehabilitative exercise in her treatments. She spent six months of clinical internship training under a Sports Medicine and Rehabilitation specialist at St. John’s Rehabilitation Hospital. Following graduation she practiced in Ireland providing Chiropractic care to a small coastal community. Upon return in 2009, she and Dr. Macpherson opened ProActive Chiropractic & Training Centre, a modern facility that offers both treatment and fitness within the same physical location.

Dr. Taia is actively involved not only in the clinical setting but in the community as well. She has been Secretary/Treasurer of the Niagara Chiropractic Society since 2011. In 2015 she was selected as a medical practitioner for the PanAm Games. She is also an Assistant Trainer for the sport-specific conditioning service Speed Unlimited®. There she teaches Bootcamp classes and works with the summer ‘Seven-S’ program (a conditioning camp for young athletes looking to gain a competitive edge in their respective sport). She has led multiple workshops on injury management, run-technique and sport nutrition; she also organizes the clinic’s annual Community Care and Rankin Cancer Run events.

Dr. Taia believes in a balanced approach to health that includes proper nutrition, regular exercise and Chiropractic care to maximize wellness. Her passion is fitness, with an athletic background that includes Track & Field (she is a Level 2 Certified Sprints & Hurdles coach), tennis, soccer & rowing. With her extensive background in athletics, and certifications in soft tissue and manipulative therapies, she has developed a skilled and effective approach to injury management.

Tele-Health Appointments with Dr. Taia

Currently, Dr. Taia also provides online (telehealth) appointments for residents of Ontario who need an assessment, rehab, or care instructions from home. Video appointments are for those who are unable to attend the clinic for safety reasons or convenience. If you have a new pain or injury you aren’t sure how to identify, or what you should do about it, a video appointment with Dr. Taia is the best way to examine, diagnose and access imaging if necessary. You may even be referred in to see a practitioner near you, if required. Some of the injuries/assessments we often see from home are:

  • a badly sprained/broken ankle

  • wrist injury (possible fracture) in a child who has fallen

  • new or worsening headaches

  • shoulder pain with activity or rest

  • knee or hip issues, often from working out more or being less active

  • numbness in the arms/hands, suspected carpal tunnel

  • sciatica-type leg pain or numbness

  • back pain, either something you’ve experienced before or new pain/stiffness

Receipt for appointment can be submitted through extended health benefits/insurance, same as an in-person appointment. Accessing the online appointment is simple, the link is sent via e-mail and can be connected through your phone, laptop or computer. For more info read our April 2020 blog
